A 20+ Year-Old Time Capsule
This 2003 Chevrolet Corvette has just over 30,000 miles on the odometer. From the outside, it looks remarkably well preserved. But with a car more than 20 years old, mileage only tells part of the story. We wanted to see what those 30,000 miles and more than two decades of age looked like underneath.
The answer was pretty impressive. The underbody is exceptionally clean for its age, with suspension components, fasteners, structural surfaces, and other exposed areas showing remarkably little deterioration.
There was, however, one small detail worth a closer look: we found a small trace of oil underneath.
A Different Way to Inspect the Front
There was another reason this Corvette made an interesting test. The car was parked close to a curb, and rather than repositioning it, we decided to inspect it exactly where it was. The rear and center sections could be captured normally.
At the front, we changed the approach. Instead of inserting the camera perpendicular to the car, we made angled passes around the left front wheel — one starting just behind the wheel and another from in front of it.

This let us look diagonally into the front underbody from two different directions while leaving the Corvette exactly where it was parked. It wasn't intended to produce perfect coverage. Visibility from an angled approach is naturally more limited, and a more comprehensive inspection would require additional passes.
But for a quick check of the overall condition, it worked surprisingly well.
A Good Test for a Low-Profile Inspection Tool
The Corvette is also simply a low car. That made this an interesting real-world test for the low-profile design of the Raccoon Machines Inspection Kit.
There isn't much room underneath, and the less-than-ideal parking position made access even more challenging. Still, we were able to get underneath and collect useful views without lifting the car, jacking it up, or even moving it away from the curb.
For a detailed inspection, we would make more passes to improve visibility and coverage.
But if the goal is simply to answer the first question — “What does this car look like underneath?” — even a quick scan can tell you quite a lot.

And on this Corvette, there's not much drama to highlight.
That's a good thing.
For a 2003 vehicle, the condition underneath is remarkable.
Front Inspection — Scan View

The front is shown in Scan View.
This is also where the unusual capture path becomes visible. Because some of the footage was collected diagonally around the front wheel rather than with our normal straight passes, the coverage isn't as uniform as it would be in an ideal setup.
But there is still enough visibility to get a useful picture of the overall condition.
For a quick inspection performed exactly where the car happened to be parked, that's a pretty useful result.
A Small Trace of Oil
Despite the exceptionally clean overall condition, we did spot a small amount of oil underneath.
From a quick visual inspection alone, it's difficult to tell whether this is an active leak or simply residual oil from a previous service or spill. It would need a closer look to determine the source — and whether there's actually anything that needs attention.

It doesn't change the overall impression of the car, but it's a good reminder of the difference between low mileage and low age.
